Kennewick, WA – In its first game back at the Toyota Center, the Tri-City Americans (1-3-0-0, 2 Pts) broke through for its first victory of the pre-season, taking down the Kootenay Ice (0-1-0-0, 0 Pts) 4-1 on Thursday night.
The Americans fell behind early on Thursday, surrendering the first goal of the game on a deflection in front of Evan Sarthou by Kootenays’ Jon Martin. The Americans would pull even with the Ice late in the period with an Austyn Playfair goal at 14:32 of the first, swinging momentum back Tri-Citys’ way.
at 12:50 of the second period Marcus Messier scored what would end up being the eventual game-winning goal for the Americans, giving Tri-City its first lead after 40 minutes in the 2013 pre-season.
Beau McCue added two insurance markers in the third period, scoring at the 11:24 mark and then adding an empty net goal at 19:39 of the third period, to close out the night for Tri-City.
Sarthou got the start in goal for the Americans , stopping 19 of the 20 shots that he faced. Troy Trombley relieved Sarthou at 12:50 of the second period, and took the Americans home by stearing aside all 13 shots.
The Americans will be right back it again tomorrow night, taking on the Seattle Thunderbirds (3-0-0-0, 6 Pts) in day two of the Red Lion Hotels Pre-Season Tournament. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. at the Toyota Center.
