AMERICANS TAKE RED LION OPENER 5-3 OVER COUGARS

KENNEWICK, WA – In a game that featured many unusual aspects, the Americans were able to hold on for the win 5-3 over the Prince George Cougars.

The game started slow with the Cougars’ McDonald scoring just five minutes in. However, Keltie Jeri-Leon had an answer for the Americans at 10:06, rifling one in. From there, both teams had penalty issues, taking a combined six penalties in the first period.

In the second, the penalty issues would continue with both teams receiving another 6 combined. Tyler Sandhu drew a penalty shot after being taken down on a breakaway. He was, unfortunately, unable to capitalize on the penalty shot. Both team’s goaltenders, Beck Warm for the Americans and Nick McBride for the Cougars, were pulled at 8:09 left in the second to be replaced by their respective backups. The Cougars scored the lone goal in the second period, capitalizing on a power play with 2:23 remaining.

The third period saw a plethora of penalties with the teams combining for 12 of them through the final 20 minutes. The Americans continued to excel in the third period, putting 4 points on the board. Dakota Krebs started the scoring just 3:45 into the period with a cannon of a shot from the point. Carson Focht stuffed one in soon after to put the Americans up 3-2. The Cougars tied it up a few minutes later with McDonald’s second goal of the night. Carson Focht decided he needed a second of his own with a goal very similar to his first for the eventual game winning goal. With 1:30 left, Jordan Topping put the puck in an empty net as an insurance goal for the Americans to win it, 5-3.
