The Tri-City Americans and Spokane Chiefs will meet in the first round of the Western Hockey League playoffs, but the teams couldn’t wait until next weekend to get things going. Saturday night, fans got a preview of things to come.

Blake Gal, on a 2-on-1 with Brenden Kichton, scored 34 seconds into overtime to lead the Chiefs to a 3-2 victory before a rowdy crowd of 5,987 at Toyota Center.

“It was a close game and a physical game, and we had more than enough chances to win,” Tri-City coach Jim Hiller said. “We wipe the slate clean and start again Friday. We have a week off, and we are going to put it to good use. We have some things to work on and we’ll try and get some guys back in the lineup.”

The Americans (40-26-2-3, 85 points), who have lost four in a row, will finish the regular season today at Everett.
