Hamonic Tabbed as Americans’ Captain for 2014-15 Season

Kennewick, WA – Tri-City Americans’ Governor/General Manager Bob Tory announced today that 20-year-old defenseman Justin Hamonic will serve as the team’s captain for the upcoming 2014-15 season.  The announcement came less than two weeks after the Americans’ 2013-14 season came to an end.  Hamonic becomes the 26th captain in the franchise’s history.

Hamonic, who just concluded his third full WHL season, is coming off a career-best 2013-14 campaign, recording new highs in assists (14) and points (15).  In 183 career games, all with the Americans, the Winnipeg, Manitoba-native has registered 2 goals, 27 points, 104 penalty minutes and plus-7 rating.

Originally drafted by the Americans in the 5th Round (102nd overall) of the 2009 WHL Bantam Draft, Hamonic played his first full WHL season in 2011-12, making his WHL debut as a member of the Americans on September 30, 2011 at Portland.  Hamonic becomes the second consecutive defenseman to be named captain of the Americans and just the fourth over the last 15 seasons, joining T.J. Fast (2007-08), Jarrett Toll (2009-10) and Mitch Topping (2013-14).  This past season, Hamonic also served two months as the Americans’ interim team captain, while Topping was out with an injury.

“It’s a great honor to be named captain of such a first-class organization…I’m very excited about it,” stated Hamonic.  “I’ve been able to learn from some great leaders like (Mitch) Topping, (Justin) Feser and Mason Wilgosh.  I hope I’ll be able to lead this team as well and as successfully as they have in the past.”

“Justin is the natural choice for next season’s captain.  As a four-year veteran, he knows our expectations and culture,” explained Tory.  “He served as interim captain when Mitch (Topping) was injured and did an excellent job.  We look forward to Justin leading our team next season.”
