Rockets Shoot Past Americans 4-2

Kelowna, BC- The Tri-City Americans (20-24-2-0, 42 pts) took an early lead against the Kelowna Rockets (32-11-3-0, 67 pts), but the Rockets tied the game in the second period and scored two goals in the third to earn a 4-2 win over Tri-City in front of 5,038 fans at Prospera Place on Friday Night.

Neither team had a good scoring chance to begin the game, but the Americans broke the scoring open midway through the first. Parker Bowles fired a slap shot from the right point, flying through traffic and into the net for a 1-0 lead. Kelowna had the shot advantage, 11-8, but it was Tri-City with the lead after one period.

Early in the second, Kelowna tied the game on the power play. Calvin Thurkauf wristed a shot from the right faceoff circle into twine to even the score at 1. Midway through the period, Tri-City regained the lead. Michael Rasmussen flipped a rebound over the right pad of Michael Herringer and over the red line for a 2-1 edge. The Rockets answered, as Rodney Southam lit the lamp with a wrist shot to even the score at two going into the third period.

Kelowna took the lead early in the third. Rourke Chartier received a pass and fired the puck low stick side into twine to make it 3-2. The lead increased to 4-2 midway through the third. Tyson Baillie skated in on a 2-on-1 and fired a shot through the legs of Evan Sarthou for the goal. Tri-City fought hard to get back into the game, but couldn’t get a goal as the Rockets cruised to the win.

The loss snaps the Americans’ three-game win streak. Kelowna has won 10 straight games against Tri-City, including the playoffs.

Tri-City failed to score with three power play chances and recorded six penalty minutes. Kelowna was 1-of-2 on the power play and spent eight minutes in the penalty box.

Evan Sarhtou made 28 saves in the loss while Michael Herringer stopped 30 shots in the win.

The Americans have a day off before they are back on the road against the Portland Winterhawks (23-21-2-0, 48 pts), this Sunday, Jan. 24. Game time is at 5 p.m. at Moda Center.
