Tri-City Edges Spokane 4-3

Spokane, WA- The Tri-City Americans (4-2-1-1, 10 pts) had a solid showing at Spokane Arena on Saturday, defeating the Spokane Chiefs (2-5-0-0, 4 pts) 4-3 to end the preseason.

Tri-City had the shot advantage in the first period 11-8, but neither team could score in the first.

In the second period, the Americans got on the board first midway through the period. Taylor Vickerman scored on the power play to put Tri-City up 1-0. Late in the period, Dominic Zwerger lit the red lamp for Spokane to even the score going into the third.

Less than a minute into the third, the Chiefs took the lead on a goal from Riley Whittingham. Four minutes later, the Americans answered with a goal from Parker Bowles, leveling the score at two. Midway through the period, Zwerger scored his second of the game for the Chiefs to retake the lead, 3-2. The Americans answered 35 seconds later as Jordan Topping added to the scoring and evened the score at three.

Less than 30 seconds later, Tri-City took the lead again. Braden Purtill fired a shot from the point, which was deflected by Parker Bowles, bounced off the ice and hopped into the net for his second tally of the game. The Chiefs tried to notch the tying goal, but Beck Warm made saves down the stretch to help the Americans earn the win.

The Americans spent 10 minutes in the penalty box and were 1-of-3 on the power play. The Chiefs were unable to convert any of its four power play opportunities and recorded eight penalty minutes.

Nicholas Sanders started in net for Tri-City and stopped all 20 shots he faced, followed by Beck Warm taking over midway through the second and making 19 saves. Garret Hughson made 25 saves in the loss for Spokane.

The regular season begins next Saturday, Sept. 26, as the Tri-City Americans face the Spokane Chiefs at Spokane Arena. Game time is at 7:05 p.m. Tri-City will begin its home schedule on Saturday, Oct. 3, against the Spokane Chiefs at the Toyota Center on Tri-Cities Rotary Opening Night.
