Americans Fend Off Giants 3-0

Vancouver, B.C.- The Tri-City Americans (21-21-0-2, 44 pts) bounced back on Friday night to snap a two-game losing streak, as Evan Sarthou stopped all 32 shots he faced to shutout the Vancouver Giants (19-22-1-1, 40 pts) 3-0 in front of 6,507 fans at Pacific Coliseum.

The two teams played a fluid first period, with the teams trading scoring chances and power play opportunities. Vancouver had the shot advantage in the first period, 8-5, but the game was scoreless heading into the second period.

Tri-City got some momentum going in the beginning of the second period, and capitalized midway through the second. Ty Comrie beat Vancouver goaltender Payton Lee with a wrist shot to put the Americans ahead 1-0. Each team had 13 shots in the period, but the Americans held onto the lead after two periods.

The Americans continued to play well in the third period, as they controlled the puck well in the offensive zone. Tri-City was finally rewarded 12:40 into the period on the power play as Taylor Vickerman one-timed a shot from the slot into the top corner of the net to make it 2-0. Vancouver tried to get a goal and get back into the game, but Sarthou didn’t let that happen, as Austyn Playfair capped off the victory with his first career WHL goal, an empty net goal, in the final minute to seal the win.

The Americans snap a two game losing streak and even the season series with Vancouver at a win each.

Tri-City recorded eight penalty minutes and was 1-of-5 on the power play, while Vancouver had 23 penalty minutes and was unable to convert any of its four chances with at least a man advantage.

Payton Lee stopped 27 shots in a losing effort, while Sarthou turned in an excellent 32 save performance for his third shutout this season.

The Americans will make the trek back to Kennewick and have no time off, as they face the Spokane Chiefs (23-16-3-1, 50 pts) on Saturday, Jan. 17, at the Toyota Center. Game time is at 7:05 p.m. Tri-City lost the last meeting against the Chiefs on New Year’s Eve, 10-2, in Kennewick. Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster locations, including the Toyota Center Box Office, any Fred Meyer outlet or online at Ticketmaster.com. The game will be televised on SWX starting at 7 p.m.
