The Americans will wrap up another three-in-three weekend today as they take on the Kelowna Rockets at the Toyota Center.
Tri-City earned a 3-2 overtime victory over the Portland Winterhawks last night in a thrilling (and interesting) fashion. After leading 2-0 heading into the third period, the Winterhawks were able to score a pair of late goals and extend the game into overtime. The Ams seemingly won as Adam Mechura put home a rebound off a shot from Reese Belton 1:08 into overtime. After a lengthy discussion, the goal was disallowed and Belton was awarded a penalty shot for being slashed on the play. Belton capitalized on the opportunity and finalized Tri-City’s overtime victory. The 20-year-old forward also scored the night’s opening goal in the first period. Tomas Suchanek had an incredible night in net, turning aside 47 of 49 shots faced.
The Americans and Rockets will meet tonight for the fourth and final time this season. Tri-City is 1-2-0-0 against Kelowna so far with their victory coming on December 3rd in Kennewick. Tri-City has been excellent at home this season with a 21-6-2-1 record and 33.9% success on the power play at the Toyota Center.
With last night’s victory, Tri-City passes Everett and moves into fifth in the Western Conference standings. The Ams are six points behind Prince George in fourth place.
