Winterhawks Edge Americans in Overtime

Portland, OR- The Tri-City Americans (14-19-2-0, 30 pts) played a solid game against the Portland Winterhawks (17-16-1-0, 35 pts), but Caleb Jones scored on a penalty shot in overtime, as the Americans fell 5-4 in front of 10,349 at the Moda Center on Sunday Night.

Portland scored first midway through the first period, as Alex Schoenborn redirected a shot into the net on the power play for a 1-0 lead. Tri-City was able to tie the game 16:12 into the period on the power play, as Parker Bowles received a tic-tac-toe pass at the back door. A minute later, the Americans took the lead, as Jeff Rayman fired a slap shot from the left point through traffic and into twine for a 2-1 advantage. With less than a minute left in the first, the Winterhawks tied the game, with Rihards Bukarts picking up a loose puck in front of the Americans’ net and slipped it into the goal, evening the game at two after the first period.

Early in the second, Tri-City took the lead once again, as Morgan Geekie redirected a Kurtis Rutledge shot into the net for a 3-2 lead. Tyler Sandhu scored a goal a few minutes later to push the advantage to 4-2 Americans. Rodrigo Abols tallied a goal for the Winterhawks on the power play late in the second to cut the Tri-City lead to 4-3 going into the third period.

The Winterhawks fought to tie the game in the third, and scored the equalizer 14:27 into the third, as Evan Weinger put the puck in the net. A winner was not scored in regulation, sending the game to overtime.

In overtime, Dylan Coghlan took down Caleb Jones on his way to the net and was awarded a penalty shot. Jones was able to tuck the puck past the right pad of Evan Sarthou to help Portland earn the victory.

Tri-City was 1-of-2 on the power play and recorded 16 penalty minutes. Portland converted 2-of-5 man advantage opportunities and spent 10 minutes in the penalty box.

Evan Sarthou played a great game, making 42 saves in the loss. Adin Hill stopped 21 shots in the win.
